songpile the first of 2012!

So, as has been my usual practice, I’ve assembled 25 of my favorite songs, new or old, that insisted themselves upon my earholes in the first three months of 2012 (not counting those on full-length albums I own…unless I felt like making an exception for, say, a “new” (to me) bonus track from a 30-year-old album…).

My spring playlist is called The Dislikeable Surfeit (after a phrase I ran into on a Facebook post) – here are the tracks:

  1. Iggy Pop “Low Life” (Soldier bonus track, 1980)
  2. The Young “Don’t Hustle for Love” (single, 2012)
  3. Title Tracks “Turn Your Face” (In Blank, 2011)
  4. Elephant & Castle [ft. Tune-Yards] “En Memoria” (Transitions, 2012)
  5. Radiation City “Find it of Use” (Cool Nightmare, 2012)
  6. Shearwater “Breaking the Yearlings” (Animal Joy, 2011)
  7. Andrew Bird “The Crown Salesman” (NoiseTrade Sampler, 2012)
  8. Saucer “Shaken Baby Syndrome” (Grow Up/Move Out: A Fayettenam Records Compilation, 2011)
  9. Paul Brill “The Royal Oui” (Breezy, 2011)
  10. Jay Farrar/Will Johnson/Anders Parker/Yim Yames “Old L.A.” (New Multitudes, 2012)
  11. We Are Augustines “Book of James” (Rise Ye Sunken Ships, 2011)
  12. Howth “Wind Blows Cold” (Newkirk, 2012)
  13. Lana Del Rey “Videogames” (Live on The Late Show with David Letterman 2/2/2012)
  14. Bruce Cockburn “Incandescent Blue” (Live, from promo EP released 1980)
  15. Beirut “Santa Fe” (The Rip Tide, 2011)
  16. The Pharmacy “Dig Your Grave” (Dig Your Grave, 2011)
  17. Father John Misty “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” (Fear Fun sampler 2012)
  18. Arrington de Dionyso’s Malaikat Dan Singa “Perawan Berawan” (Sunshine Off the Tracks: A Benefit for GEMS compilation, 2012)
  19. Violens “Der Microarc” (True, 2012)
  20. John Wesley Coleman III “A Clown Gave You a Baby” (Last Donkey Show, 2012)
  21. Those Darlins “Screws Get Loose” (Screws Get Loose, 2011)
  22. The Phantom Family Halo “White Hot Gun” (When I Fall Out, 2012)
  23. Silver Dapple “Soleil Électrique” (Oh! Canada 20 compilation, 2012)
  24. Joshua McCormack “Terminal Velocity” (The Phantom King, 2012)
  25. Lambchop “Gone Tomorrow” (Mr. M, 2012)

A few notes: Some minor editing here and there to trim silences or bring levels to more approximately equal averages. I didn’t add any compression, except for on the two live tracks (and speaking of which, that live Bruce Cockburn EP is, for me, just way better than any of his studio work or officially released live work – curious). A bit more delicate surgery on the opening of the Bird track, and the last 90 seconds of the Arrington de Dionyso track has been removed here for better flow (it’s some ambient bells – but you can hear them on the Spotify version of this playlist, which substitutes eight other songs for the songs above that aren’t available on Spotify, here.)
